Piezoelectric Ceramic (PZT)

Piezoelectric materials (PZT) are advanced ceramic materials capable of converting mechanical energy into electrical energy, and vice versa. They are used as critical materials for sensors and actuators in the industrial sector.

Principle of Operation

The piezoelectric effect refers to two phenomena that occur because the PZT crystal structure itself is asymmetrical.

Direct Piezoelectric Effect: When physical pressure is applied to PZT, the internal charge density changes, generating an electric charge (voltage). (Examples: gas stove igniters, impact sensors)

Reverse Piezoelectric Effect: When an electric current is applied to PZT, the crystal structure undergoes microscopic deformation, creating mechanical movement. (Examples: ultrasonic transducers, precision stages)

Chemical Composition of PZT

PZT is a ferroelectric ceramic with a perovskite structure composed of oxides of lead (Pb), zirconium (Zr), and titanium (Ti). Chemical formula: Pb(ZrTi₁₋ₓ)O. By adjusting the ratio of zirconium to titanium (x), the desired electrical and mechanical properties can be precisely tailored. Typically, piezoelectric performance is maximized when the Zr:Ti ratio is around 52:48, corresponding to the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB).

Key commercial applications

  • Ultrasonic technology: Used across a variety of ultrasonic applications, such as medical ultrasound diagnostic devices, ultrasonic cleaners, and fish finders (sonar).

  • Precision Control (Actuator): Used in equipment that requires ultra-precise control, such as nanometer-level position control in semiconductor lithography systems and ink ejection in inkjet printer heads.

  • Energy Harvesting: Used in applications that convert ambient energy — such as pedestrian or machine vibrations — into electrical energy to power sensors without batteries.

  • Automotive Industry: Widely used in critical automotive components such as knock sensors, ultrasonic parking sensors, and fuel injectors.
